One of the things that occupy my time these days is reading Steve Jobs biography. The sensation about him remains strong despite he is no longer with us. While writing this, I am going to read about his life in NeXT.
After reading the first few chapters, I have lots of thought. I came to understand why he behave in certain ways, the good and bad qualities in him, the 1 common trait he shared with Winston Churchill and led both of them to make a dent in the universal. And I studied the history of personal computer. It was a good read.
Why he believed he was the one who will change the world? Because his parents told him that he was chosen one, not abandoned.
Why was he such a perfectionist? Because of his father Paul Jobs’ influence. His father insisted the hidden part of a furniture is as important as the visible part.
Why was he such a good marketer and speaker? Because of his colleague Mike Markkula’s influence. Mike was a father figure to Steve, he taught Jobs about “empathy, focus and impute" in marketing, and these was clearly seen in all Steve Jobs' keynote throughout his life.
And many more …
We are the product of our environment. The "great" Steve was largely shaped by the persons he met in his earlier years. We are product of the people we associated with. Be careful who you call as friends.
Bad guys are not just thieves, murderer or criminal, they might be just another friend who doesn't add value into your life.
As parents, we strive to provide the good environment for our children. To remind them who they should mix with.
As grown up adults, we too need to be watchful about circle friends.
(This doesn’t mean we walk around and start labeling people. It is more about what level of influence you receive from them and time spend with them.)
