I admire how effortless Forrest Gump run. A man on his own course (later on joined by hundreds of inspired strangers). I wish I can do the same like him, just run. And I have a long term goal to run a full marathon, when I am more "ready" and have time to train for it.
Lately there is deadly running epidemic among my friends. Almost every other weeks there is race. On the spur of moment, I signed up Nike We Run KL 10KM run. Partly out of peer influence, partly also I wanted to achieve something personal.
Something Personal
I want to develop my discipline and sheer determination to get things done. I need activities for me to train for these. Running is my best option. Because I can do it on my own schedule, with minimum external factors. I want to run a race, so that I can tell Myra that her daddy didn't give up on a race.
Motivation
I managed to talk a few friends to be my motivators. Since this was my maiden official run, they agreed. Neo agreed to buy me a 3D movies if I make it under 1h20min, additional Coke if under 1h10min. Gan agreed to treat me meal base on how impress he was on my result. Marn agreed to give me 4G USB drive if I manage to finish the race.
Training
Due to busyness with personal and family matters, majority of my trainings started after 10pm for less than 30min. This suited me best as I dislike the heat. I would jog around my quiet neighborhood. Every round is 1.3KM. The challenge was, I would set target to run for 4 rounds, but ended up stop in front of my house after 3 rounds. The temptation to rest was so strong. I would say to myself, I could have easily pay for the rewards, why torture myself. There were times, my left knee caused me so much pain and I had to drag my feet back to my house after just 1 round of run. The maximum distance I covered for my training was slightly short of 5.3KM, half of my race distance. I have never run outside my neighborhood. The final week I was too occupied and didn't manage to practice, but it did me good as my left knee fully rested and recovered.
The Race Day
I was so unprepared for the race. Didn't know what to expect. I squeezed myself closer to the starting line to be with my friends moment before the race. There was a huge crowd. I started off with a fast pace run, not that I planned to, but the crowd just messed up my thoughts. After 3KM, I so wanted to call it a quit (my usual training, slightly more than 2 rounds run in my neighborhood). I wanted to call for medic and asked them to give me ride back home. After crossing 6KM, I already did my personal best. Every additional KM was my personal record. The race route covered 2 long uphills, I walked most of it. My training in my neighborhood didn't include climbing long uphills.
- Running in a large crowd is a big challenge, you are easily tempted by others to slow down to walk, or discouraged by those fast runners who overtook you. When I wanted to pick up my pace and run, another group of runners who blocked my way tempted me to slow down to a walk again.
- I used iPhone as race tracker and timing cue through phone speaker. Didn't know that the noise from streets was so loud and made what used to be annoying loud cue in my quiet neighborhood to be inaudible level. I didn't know when I should push harder, current pace and etc.
- Bigger size, older age, more ladylike male/female can easily run faster than me. Running is all about stamina and most importantly Will Power.
- I prepared a few bible memory verses to recite to help me focus on my run. Didn't recite at all, my thoughts were too distracted by people and environment.
Crossing The Finish Line
I run the last 200meter, I crossed the line, I was too busy to grasp for breathe and stay standing. Forgot to turn off my race tracker. My unofficial run time was around 1h12min. I think I stood a good chance to beat 1h10min mark if I push hard enough. I could have won my big Coke for my movie treat. And this thought will drive me to run the next race, which is a good thing.

Reward
Actually, the movie, the meal and the USB drive are the added things. I see improvement in my personal discipline and determination. In life, if you want something bad enough, and willing to put in the disciplinary actions, you can achieve anything you want. And that's the biggest reward I am going to reap. And I can tell Myra that you don't give up your race, you just finish it.
Next goal
Won't go for many races as it is big commitment to time. I will definitely aim for Standard Chartered KL Run, Addidas King of The Road Run, return to Nike KL Run. And most importantly Penang Bridge run, because I am big fan of Lim Guan Eng :)
